Each week I love it when it comes round to Paper Saturdays and I can show you what I have been trying out. For ages now I have been wanting to make some paper mache bowls to put on one of the tables in my studio and after finally sorting out the renovating mess the time felt right to get down to making at least one bowl.
It truly is super easy and fun as long as you don't expect perfectly shaped bowls at the end of the process. I love misshapes so this isn't a problem to me. Give it a try it won't cost you a fortune either. All you need is a bowl, cling film, scraps of paper, a paper puncher, glue paste to put it all together and mod podge to seal it all.
Start by making your Glue paste.
- Mix half a cup of plain flour with 2 cups of cold water.
- Then put 2 more cups of water in a sauce pan, bring to boil and then add the flour and cold water mixture to your pan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil again and then immediately remove from heat and add 3 tablespoons of sugar to the pan.
Let the mix cool down completely until it thickens down and you are ready to play.
Cover your bowl with cling film. Punch paper shapes with a puncher and cover them in the glue paste. You can use a painting brush to do this but just make sure the paper is saturated. Cover the bowl with your shapes and let it dry overnight. You can add more layers for strength if you want but it is important to let each layer dry overnight. When you are happy with your design and it is completely dry carefully pull the paper mache bowl away from the ceramic bowl. You may get some tears at this stage but don't worry this is easily fixed with some more glue paste and paper shapes.
All you need now for the bowl to become strong is some modpodge. You can seal the bowl in and out with that stuff and you are ready to go. I repeated this final step only once but if done more than once I am sure it will carry more than just cotton wool. I am aiming for marshmallow what about you?
