My children have been on holiday the last two weeks so there has been very little time for big painting projects.
It is especially at these times that I will sit down and make some ATCs. These little cards are perfect for me, I feel I can just be unrestricted and mess about. They are also ideal for trying out new ideas.
Did you know that ATCs were already around in the 16Th century and that in those days they were mostly sold, not traded or given away.
These first Art Cards were mainly miniature portraits and not what we see now. The portraits were used for exchange when rich people arranged marriages.
Also men would, often without their wives knowing, have their Mistresses painted nude on those little art cards.Men used to carry the cards in their wallets. The first wallet 'photos'.
During the Impressionist Age artists traded art cards among themselves to study each other's style and techniques. They also traded or sold the art cards as necessary for supplies, food and lodging.
I am glad I am not depended on trading my cards for food or lodging.
I would certainly have a meager existence.

Those are adorable,I love their faces. And that what was interesting about the ATC's,I knew they used to be trading but not anything else. Thanks for sharing.
